Hertfordshire Crimestoppers Chair goes the extra mile for charity

The vice-chair of Hertfordshire Crimestoppers embarked on a coast-to-coast walk totalling almost 200 miles this month to raise money for the crime-fighting charity. Details and photos taken on the walk can be viewed here

Peter Camilletti, 61, began his journey at St Bees in Cumbria andwalked all the way up to Robin Hood's bay in North Yorkshire.  With beautiful backdrops, such as the Lake District, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Moors, it provided a welcomed motivation for the chair. The walk was devised by Alfred Wainwright, famous for his walking guide books, especially those related to the Lake District and in recent years has become famous after a TV series on the walk hosted by Julia Bradbury.

It was extra special for Peter, as during the mammoth challenge he celebrated his 62nd birthday.

He said: “Last year I did a two day section across the North Yorkshire Moors just to see if I was up to it. I was a bit stiff after two days in which I covered 35 miles but it convinced me I could do it. “What really made up my mind was the great people you meet on the walk. Everybody is friendly and willing to pass on tips. People come from all over the world to do this walk and the main reasons are the challenge and the great company of fellow walkers”.

Speaking about the crime-fighting charity and the reasons for wanting to raise money for it, he said: “I’m raising money for Hertfordshire Crimestoppers so that we can continue to fight crime and make a difference in our community. Many people do not realise that we are an independent charity, but think we are part of the police or the TV programme. “We need to raise funds in order to promote the vital, anonymous service that we provide and pay the rewards available for information given to us”.

Explaining the role and importance of Crimestoppers, he added: “When someone rings our number (0800 555 111) or sends a secure online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org we do not ask for your name or any personal details. No call or IP address is traced and no calls are recorded.

“You won’t have to give a statement, speak to the Police or go to court – we only want to know what you know, not who you are. In the 23 years that Crimestoppers has been running we have never broken our anonymity promise.”

With 23 arrests being made every day from information given to Crimestoppers, the charity plays a significant part in getting criminals off the street. Hertfordshire has about 10 active and passionate volunteers, like Peter, who give up their own time to promote the charity. It was their hard work which led to over 800 calls to Hertfordshire Crimestoppers last year.
