Coast to Coast Progress Report

The walk through the Lake District was wet but as we came out of Shap the wind got stronger as we caught the end of Hurricane Katrina. I saw a woman in front of blown off her feet.  Every day was exciting with different challenges at beautiful scenery.  One of the great features of the walk is the fellowship between the walkers.  People come from all over the world to walk from Coast to Coast especially from the USA, Canada and Australia.
Every evening is spent in a local pub for food and a drink with all those on the same leg of the walk.  The people are not always the same as people walk at different speeds !
I developed a blister just over half way along but it was my fault as I thought a day in walking shoes rather than boots would make things easier on the 23 mile walk on the flat from Richmond to Ingleby Cross.  I should have stuck with my boots as the skin came off my little toe on my right foot.
Without going in to lengthy detail of the walk I think the last evening sums up the flavour of the Coast to Coast.  We stopped at a working farm on a hill side above a village called Littlebeck.  The farmers wife, Judith, greeted us with a mug of tea and a huge slice of cake each.  She told us that she had ten guests to stay that night.  Judith cooked all ten of huge meal which had at grand dining room table. We sat chatting until time for bed. It was an evening  I will never forget. As I was pulling my boots on and being licked on the face by the farm sheepdog the farmer asked if I could help herd the cows.  So my last day started with herding cows.! Then later in the morning I slipped on a stepping stone and fell into a stream.  All part of the fun.
As I drove home I realised that the distance from Scotch Corner to my House near Royston was about the same distance I had walked in two weeks - it does give you great feeling of achievement. Age is no barrier - we met people well into their 70s on the walk. It's challenging, its not a race and it is to be enjoyed
If I helped raise some money for Crimestoppers so much the better.
