Community Cricket 2011
This year’s community cricket day, sponsored by independent charity Crimestoppers, was another success, with a win for the team from the local community.
Held last Sunday (July 10) at Watford Town Cricket Club, cricket enthusiasts joined members of the Hertfordshire Crimestoppers Board and Hertfordshire Police Authority to watch a community team play against a team of Herts Police officers and staff. The Police Team was captained by Assistant Chief Constable Chris Miller
After a draw last year, the team of community participants beat the police team by 10 runs in another close match.
PC Irfan Ishaq, one of the event’s main organisers, said: “The event was another success and another exciting match between both teams.t was also an opportunity for members of the public to find out about the work of the police, the Police Authority and independent charity Crimestoppers, which many people did.”
He added: “I would like to thank everyone involved in organising the event for their support. Particular thanks go to the three umpires for the day – Lateef Hussaini, David Frame and Mr Choudhury – all of whom did a sterling job in overseeing proceedings.
For those who didn’t play cricket, it was a chance to either watch or enjoy the free bouncy castle and other activities.”
The event started at 12pm and ran until 6.30pm, and cash prizes sponsored by Crimestoppers were given to individual winners as well as the overall winning team’s trophy. Individual awards were for:
Outstanding Fielding Performance
Outstanding Bowling Performance
Man of the Match
People came from Watford, Hatfield and Hemel Hempstead.
Brenda Griffiths, a member of both the Hertfordshire Police Authority and Crimestoppers Board who helped organise the day said: “This was another exciting day of cricket and it was good to see families enjoying the day. The weather was kind to us and we were all pleased to see such a close finish. Well done Community team!”
Next year’s match is scheduled for July 2012.
